清朝康熙二十年（1681年）秋天，梁汾以母丧南归，纳兰在他还乡奔丧时写下这首《木兰花慢》为他送别。

词的上片，词人开门见山地表述了他与好友聚少离多的现实，所以分别的时候二人愈加地难分难舍。“盼银河迢递，惊入夜，转清商。”一个“盼”字，写出了容若与友人的期待。只可恨“天有不测风云”，“惊入夜，转清商”，一场突如其来的秋雨随风而至，一个“惊”字，语意突转，尽显出乎预料之意。“盼”与“惊”形成鲜明的对比，词的感情也由美好的期盼陡然直降，成了失落。“乍西园蝴蝶，轻翻麝粉，暗惹蜂黄。”这场雨来得真的是太突然了，连院子里的蝴蝶都没有准备好，吓得四处翻飞，扑棱着翅膀，鳞粉也飘落下来。一不小心，又惊到了无辜的小蜜蜂。这样一来，园中蜂飞蝶舞，一片慌乱景象。这个气候真是变化无常，明明之前还是晴朗温暖，一瞬间就变得风雨交加、阵阵凉寒。这雨浙渐沥沥的，连绵不绝下个不停，而且点点滴滴，敲打着心房，缠绵着柔肠。“甚丝丝、点点搅柔肠”，夜雨愁人，上天看到世间的悲苦，流下眼泪，化作雨水，洒落在人间。如果说之前容若还在隐忍着离别的伤心，这一句开始感情便出现了波澜。“应是登临送客，别离滋味重尝。”是送友远行，再一次尝到了离别的滋味，再一次忍受相思之苦。一个“重”字真是尽显无奈与怨恨。
到了下片，词人笔锋一转，开始嘱咐好友要努力加餐饭，在桂花飘香的时节要如约归来。“水墨画疏窗，孤影淡潇湘”意境很是空淡疏缈。潇湘和下片开头“疑将”连在一起看，秋夜雨洒落在疏窗上，那雨痕仿佛是屏风上画出的潇湘夜雨图。“潇湘”二字本就是离愁别恨的代名词，在这里无非是纳兰心事的一种寄托。“倩一叶高梧，半条残烛，做尽商量”，这句子纳兰说得婉转，窗外夜雨梧桐、屋内泣泪残烛，怎不让人伤神。因此纳兰说，能否请梧桐和灯烛细做掂量，莫要此时再添人愁绪。“荷裳一被风暗剪，问今宵谁与盖鸳鸯”，已至秋天，荷塘自然也是一片萧索，此情此景，像极了李商隐那首《宿骆氏亭寄怀崔雍崔衮》里的句子：“秋阴不散霜飞晚，留得枯荷听雨声。”到了“从此羁愁万迭，梦回分付啼萤”，纳兰终于将“送别”二字明写在了词面上，“雨夜”“寒蝉”渲染了离别的气氛，离别后，愁惰万叠，只恨造化弄人。词人把这样的话放在词末，惜别离愁之意溢于言表。

纳兰性德（1655－1685），满洲人，字容若，号楞伽山人，清代最著名词人之一。其诗词“纳兰词”在清代以至整个中国词坛上都享有很高的声誉，在中国文学史上也占有光采夺目的一席。他生活于满汉融合时期，其贵族家庭兴衰具有关联于王朝国事的典型性。虽侍从帝王，却向往经历平淡。特殊的生活环境背景，加之个人的超逸才华，使其诗词创作呈现出独特的个性和鲜明的艺术风格。流传至今的《木兰花令·拟古决绝词》——“人生若只如初见，何事秋风悲画扇？等闲变却故人心，却道故人心易变。”富于意境，是其众多代表作之一。
