燕郊大地，芳草鲜美的季节快要过去；边城之中，仍然残存着点点积雪。
阳春四月，青青的野草遍布四野；辽水的北岸，积雪融化，涨起了春汛。
关外胡人正在放养战马，关内汉家将日日征兵。
露水凝重，把将士的宝刀打湿了；沙土松虚，军队的金鼓呜呜作鸣。
戍卒们冬天的寒衣已经穿烂，可是这时春天的服装还没有谁给他们做成。
转告前往洛阳的使者，请你传达一下这边塞的艰苦情况。
注释
辽西作：《河岳英灵集》、《唐诗纪事》均作《辽西》。辽西，古郡名，战国燕置，隋唐已废，这里指辽河流域西部地区，唐代在此设置平卢节度使。
燕郊：指辽西。辽西地区为战国时期燕国边区，故称。芳岁：即百花盛开的季节，指春季。
残雪：残存的积雪。
合：即长满，遍布。
辽阳：指辽水北岸地区。春水生：指四月份辽水上游地区积雪融化，形成辽河的春汛。
胡人：指奚、契丹、靺鞨等少数民族。
日：即天天。
沙虚：指沙土不结实。金鼓：即四金和六鼓，四金指錞﹑镯﹑铙﹑铎。六鼓指雷鼓﹑灵鼓﹑路鼓﹑鼖鼓﹑鼛鼓﹑晋鼓。一作“金甲”。
春服：春日穿的衣服。谁为成：意即谁来做，一作“与谁成”，又一作“谁与成”。
洛阳使：指前往洛阳的使者。
边塞：一作“边戍”。

据《唐诗纪事》，这首诗约作于唐玄宗天宝（742—756年）初年。

辽西作鉴赏
“四月青草合，辽阳春水生”四句是说：燕郊大地，芳草鲜美的季节快要过去；边城之中，仍然残存着点点积雪。阳春四月，青青的野草遍布四野；辽水的北岸，积雪融化，涨起了春汛。这几句描写辽西春天的景象。起句点名时节地点。辽西地处北国，虽然已是晚春，却残雪犹存，让人感到阵阵寒意。既称“芳岁”，复称“残雪”，再一个“冻”字，写出了这里荒寒而独特的景象。“四月”照应“芳岁晚”；“春水”暗应“残雪”。这两句在荒寒的背景上涂抹了清亮的生命的绿色，意境宁静优美。
“露重宝刀湿，沙虚金鼓鸣”四句意为：关外胡人正在放养战马，关内汉家将日日征兵。露水凝重，把将士的宝刀打湿了；沙土松虚，军队的金鼓呜呜作鸣。这四句由前面描绘辽西春景转为写人。四月春草合，故胡人正牧马。胡人入侵通常是在秋高马肥之时，此春天牧马，看似安宁祥和，实暗伏杀机，因而汉将日征兵，严加防范，不敢懈怠。“露重”两句，用兵器与铠甲在自然条件下的反应突出士兵作战的艰苦，引出下文的感叹。
“寒衣着已尽，春服谁为成。寄语洛阳使，为传边塞情”四句意为：戍卒们冬天的寒衣已经穿烂，可是这时春天的服装还没有谁给他们做成。转告前往洛阳的使者，请你传达一下这边塞的艰苦情况。这四句即景抒情。“寒衣”二字，呼应开头次句“残雪冻边城”。寒衣已尽，春服无着，戍边生活倍加艰辛，却无人知晓、可怜。“春服谁为成”，采用疑问语气，意即没有做成，自然引出结句寄语洛阳使，亦即寄语朝廷，要体恤边关将士的辛苦。字里行间，饱含着诗人的深切同情。
这首反映边塞生活的诗作，语言平实，层次清晰，格调刚健，境界沉雄，饱含深情，意在言外，可谓“风骨凛然，一窥塞垣，说尽戎旅”。
