粤王台怀古创作背景
廖燕在1747年（康熙十二年）初至广州，为时一年。这一年十二月，吴三桂联合耿精忠、尚之信发动叛乱，三藩之乱起。数月之间，连陷辰州、沅州等地，据岭南六省。此时，斗争性质未明，廖燕寄予复明厚望。于是，在广州写了这首诗，时间当在1747年末，或1748年春。

廖燕（公元1644－1705年），初名燕生，字柴舟，曲江人。清初具有异端色彩的思想家、文学家，因一介布衣，既无显赫身世，又乏贤达奥援，所以生前死后，均少人知。待道光年间，阮元主修《广东通志》，其集已难寻觅。他一生潦倒，在文学上却颇有成就。
