这是张籍游成都时写的一首七绝，诗通过描写成都市郊的风物人情和市井繁华景况，表现了诗人对太平生活的向往。因为这诗不拘平仄，所以用标乐府体的“曲”字示之。
锦江，以江水清澄、濯锦鲜明而著称。它流经成都南郊，江南为郊野，江北为市区，江中有商船。地兼繁华、幽美之胜。诗的前两句展现诗人顺锦江西望时的美景。新雨初霁，在绿水烟波的背景下，山头岭畔，荔枝垂红，四野飘溢清香。那如画的景色十分诱人。这两句写眼前景，景中含情，韵味深长，如跳动的音符，悠扬的旋律，拨动了人们的心弦。
上面写郊野景色，后两句则是由于“桥”和“酒家”的跳入眼帘，逗引起人们对市井繁华情况的想象。桥下水入岷江流至宜宾，与金沙江合为长江，东流直达南京，唐时商贾往来，船只很多。“万里桥边多酒家，游人爱向谁家宿？”唐时酒家多留宿客人。读了这两句，使人由“万里桥”而想到远商近贾，商业兴盛，水陆繁忙；由“多酒家”想到游人往来，生意兴隆。最后说：游人呀，你究竟选择那一酒家留宿更称心如意呢？从这问人和自问的语气里，使人想到处处招待热情、家家朴实诚恳的风土人情和店店别具风味、各有诱人“闻香下马”的好酒。处处酒家好，反而不知留宿何处更好了。
沈德潜说：“七言绝句，以语近情遥、含吐不露为主；只眼前景，口头语，而有弦外音，味外味，使人神远。”（《说诗晬语》）张籍此诗，句句含景，景景有情，特别是后二句，近似口语，却意味深远，读后感到精警而又自然。诗人既善于抓住富于特征的一般景物，又善于抓住思绪中最闪光的一瞬间——“游人爱向谁家宿？”这样就能使一篇之朴，养一句之神；一句之灵，回一篇之运。这就是张籍“看似寻常最奇崛”之风格所在，也是诗作具有弦外音、味外味、使人神远的艺术魅力之所在。

张籍（约767～约830），唐代诗人。字文昌，汉族，和州乌江（今安徽和县）人，郡望苏州吴（今江苏苏州）1 。先世移居和州，遂为和州乌江（今安徽和县乌江镇）人。世称“张水部”、“张司业”。张籍的乐府诗与王建齐名，并称“张王乐府”。著名诗篇有《塞下曲》《征妇怨》《采莲曲》《江南曲》。1 《张籍籍贯考辨》认为，韩愈所说的“吴郡张籍”乃谓其郡望，并引《新唐书·张籍传》、《唐诗纪事》、《舆地纪胜》等史传材料，驳苏州之说而定张籍为乌江人。
