尾大不掉的典故

春秋时，楚国国君楚灵王于公元前531年在城地、蔡地、不羹筑城，并打算派弃疾做蔡公。为此，楚王向申无宇征求意见：“你看让弃疾去蔡地怎么样？”申无宇说：“选择儿子没有像父亲那样合适的，选择臣子没有像国君那样合适的。郑庄公在栎地筑城西安置了子元，使昭公不能立为国君。齐桓公在谷地筑城而安置了管仲，到现在齐国还得到利益。臣听说，五种大人物不在边境，五种小人物不在朝廷；亲近的人不在外边，寄居的人不在里边。现在弃疾在外边，郑丹在里边，君王恐怕要稍加戒备才好。”楚王说：“国都有高大的城墙，怎么样？”申无宇回答说：“在郑国的京地、栎地杀了曼伯，在宋国的萧地、毫地杀了子游，在齐国的渠丘杀了无知，在卫国的蒲地、戚地赶走了献公。如果从这样看来，就有害于国都。树枝大了一定折断，尾巴大了就不能摇动，这是君王所知道的。”
