芒刺在背的典故

公元前87年汉武帝死后，他年仅8岁的小儿子刘弗陵即位。史称汉昭帝。按照武帝的遗诏，由大司马大将军霍光、御史大夫桑弘羊等辅政，掌握朝廷军政大权：昭帝的寿命不长，21岁就死了。他没有儿子，于是霍光把武帝的孙子刘贺立为皇帝。后来，霍光发现刘贺生活放荡不堪，整天寻欢作乐，经与大臣们商量，把刘贺废掉，另立武帝的曾孙刘询为帝。这就是汉宣帝。不过刘询也非常清楚，霍光的权势很大，自己的生死存废完全决定于他，因此对他很害怕。刘询即位后做的一件大事，就是去谒见祖庙。到了那一天，宣帝乘坐一辆装饰华丽的马车，霍光就坐在马车一侧陪侍，皇帝见霍光身材高大，脸容严峻，不由自主地觉得非常畏惧，惶恐不安，就像有芒刺在背上那样难受。此后，宣帝见到霍光，总是小心翼翼。公元前68年霍光病死，乘车时再也没有他陪侍，宣帝才感到无拘元束，行动自由了。
