春秋时期，孔子在年轻时当过赶马的车夫，从御术中的“起乘转合”中悟出许多人生道理，如“无欲速，无见小利。欲速则不达，见小利则大事不成。”他在周游列国的途中给弟子们讲述这些道理，子路笑他政治上到处碰壁，他用欲速则不达来推诿。
