春秋时期，晋献公宠信骊姬造成申生自杀，重耳与夷吾出逃，国内大乱。夷吾借助秦穆公的兵力回国继位，他对曾经杀死两位国君的里克采取拉拢的策略，又担心他会谋反，就赐死他。里克自知罪责难逃，说这是欲加之罪，何患无辞。
